A Japanese Road Older Than Japan

A man from Nagoya came to stay at Guest House Ioly Osaka on a Saturday.

Checking in with just a bag, he said he had walked along Takenouchi Kaido Road all the way from Kawachi-Matsubara station to Kaminotaishi station.

Takenouchi Kaido Road is an ancient road that stretches from Sakai City, Osaka, to Katsuragi City, Nara, and it's been registered as a Japan Heritage site since 2017. It goes from Sakai towards the east to Matsubara City, Habikino City, Taishi Town, and to Katsuragi City after going over the Takenouchi mountain pass. This road is supposed to be older than the name of our country 'Japan'.

The guest, in his 60's, had walked up to the end of the Osaka part of the route when he came back to Guest House Ioly that lies right between Matsubara and Habikino. When I asked him about it, he explained that he had found there were no other accommodation in either Taishi Town nor Habikino City, so he just had to take the train to get back here...

Indeed, there aren't any other places to stay around here.

The next morning, he checked out right after dawn to head for Nara again.

He said he was to go back to work the following day.

It must have been a little weekend journey for him.

Meanwhile, there was a marathon called Takenouchi Marathon on November 29th on the same road. The road might attract more people in the future!
